Returning to Disneyland for my birthday felt like reopening a chapter I thought I had closed. As a former annual pass holder for nearly fifteen years, I once knew the parks inside and out. That era ended as my children grew into teenagers, and by 2017, regular Disney visits quietly faded into memory. What I didn’t expect, on this return visit, was to discover that the Magic Kingdom wasn’t just nostalgic—it was better than I remembered.
The park has evolved in ways that genuinely enhance the visit. The Disney app now allows you to curate your day around your interests, energy level, and priorities. From mobile ordering to ride reservations, it offers flexibility that simply didn’t exist before. If possible, the best way to enjoy Disneyland is to give yourself time—a three-day park hopper (California residents save over 50%) or at least three days in the parks makes all the difference. Whether you’re there for one day or several, building in intentional breaks and moments of rest is essential. Stepping away to recharge ensures the joy doesn’t turn into exhaustion, and Disney offers countless ways to rest while still soaking in the atmosphere.
Once inside the park, upgrading to Lightning Lane Pass (formerly Genie+) is worth serious consideration, especially during peak seasons like Christmas or summer. Skipping long lines allows you to enjoy your favorite attractions with ease and reduces stress significantly. One important tip: Lightning Lane Pass can only be purchased after you’ve entered the park—a detail that isn’t clearly explained in the app and can be frustrating if you don’t know it ahead of time. While the app isn’t the most intuitive, cast members are always available and eager to help.
At Disney California Adventure (DCA), those restorative moments are easy to find. The Paradise Garden Bandstand offers live music such as cumbias and mariachi, creating a festive yet relaxing space where you can sit, dine, or even dance while soaking in the atmosphere. Mickey and Minnie often arrive dressed in vibrant Mexican attire, greeting guests and posing for photos, adding joy without requiring you to be on your feet all day. One of my favorite restful escapes at DCA is the Disney Animation Building in Hollywood Land. Inside, Turtle Talk with Crush provides a theatre-style setting where you can sit back and enjoy live, improvised conversations as Crush interacts with the audience, answering questions and cracking jokes. Just across the way is Animation Academy, where guests learn to draw Disney characters. It’s creative, calming, and fun—and you can keep your artwork (I kept mine and later used it for art time with my students).
Food alone was a reminder of how thoughtfully Disney does dining. We mostly snacked inside the parks, and one standout was Maurice’s Treats, located to the left of Sleeping Beauty’s Castle near the Disney Princess Greeting Room. Their ham and cheese croissants and garlic cheesy pretzel bread are unforgettable. We skipped character dining in the park an opted for an exceptional character dining brunch Storytellers Cafe at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel. The brunch featured a carving station with prime rib and turkey, along with an impressive spread (minus mashed potatoes). A full-service bar—separate from the meal—offered specialty drinks. What highlighted the event was the parading and dancing of Mickey, Minnie, Pluto, and Chip & Dale through the room, greeting guests, posing for photos, and creating moments of pure delight. Watching adults light up alongside children was a powerful reminder of how joy transcends age when we allow it. Afterward, relaxing near the piano bar in the lobby of the hotel with Disney melodies, fireplaces, and cozy seating felt like a perfect pause before evening adventures.
California Adventure impressed just as much. Wine Country Trattoria is a must-visit if you want a full-service meal that feels elevated yet affordable. Dining outdoors with views of the Mickey Ferris Wheel and passing mini parades added charm to the experience. I enjoyed a rich carbonara pasta, while another standout dish featured braised short rib marsala with roasted garlic mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables. A popular pasta option—pappardelle with broccolini, caramelized onions, mushrooms, and creamy sauce—was so flavorful I could have eaten the broth alone all day. The extensive wine list elevated the entire meal and proved that Disney dining can feel both indulgent and reasonable.
Other culinary highlights included the famous lobster nachos at Lamplight Lounge’s Boardwalk Dining area in Pixar Pier, where we were even offered extra cheese sauce at no additional cost. Additionally, DCA and the Lamplight offer a wide variety of cocktails and specialty beer featuring a rotating selection of draft beers, often including GameCraft Brewing Red Ale, Brewery Ommegang Everything Naughty, 2 Towns Ciderhouse Cosmic Crisp, Maui Brewing Co. OMG IPA, Firestone Walker Cali Squeeze Blood Orange, and Engkanto Paint Me Purple Ube Lager.
For my birthday, I wanted something festive and transportive, so we headed to Trader Sam’s Enchanted Tiki Room. With live Hawaiian music, ukuleles, pupu platters, and creative cocktails, it truly felt like a mini island escape. It’s a place designed for pause. A deliberate contrast to the sensory overload of the park. Inside, time loosens its grip. The tiki décor, playful surprises, and low-lit atmosphere invite you to settle in, exhale, and let your shoulders drop. It’s not about rushing through; it’s about lingering.It’s easily accessible via the Disneyland Monorail, exiting at Downtown Disney near the Disneyland Hotel.
The rides, however, were what truly reminded me how much Disney continues to innovate. Three new favorites that didn’t exist in 2017 stood out: Guardians of the Galaxy—Mission: BREAKOUT!, Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run, and Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway. Guardians of the Galaxy takes the former Tower of Terror concept and amplifies it tenfold—I found it thrilling, intense, and honestly too much to ride twice. Smugglers Run was pure chaos in the best way; we piloted the Falcon with enthusiastic screaming, laughter, dramatic expletives along with“we’re going to die!” moments that entertained our entire crew. Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway was a surprise favorite, with stunning animation and a trackless ride system that makes you feel like you’re falling into an animated adventure. Had I known sooner, I would have ridden it multiple times.
There are a few caveats worth noting. Entry lines for both parks were longer than expected—even mid-morning—which initially made us think opening time had changed. Once inside, though, everything flowed smoothly. Dining reservations for popular restaurants must be made through the app, and while it can be clunky, cast members readily assist. Even as locals, we chose a three-day stay and booked the Fairfield Marriott across the street on Harbor Boulevard. The hotel was basic but clean, with friendly staff, partial fireworks views, and convenient amenities like microwaves and a large dining area on the 3rd floor. Coffee and mini fridges are available in the room along with Netflix casting. Due to post-COVID policies, housekeeping was offered every other day.
Overall, Disneyland exceeded my expectations. From the food and service to the thoughtful touches—like receiving a personalized birthday button during our first horse-drawn carriage ride down Main Street—it felt celebratory and intentional at every turn. Some say Disneyland is overpriced, but I disagree. A single-day ticket costs about the same as a show at the Sphere, and food, drinks, and merchandise are comparable—or even more reasonable—than many other entertainment venues. Whether you’re a child or simply young at heart, Disneyland remains, without question, the happiest place on Earth—and perhaps even better than you remember.
