June shines as National Adopt a Cat Month, a nationwide campaign dedicated to raising awareness about cat adoption and encouraging families to welcome shelter cats and kittens into their lives. With kitten season in full swing, animal shelters and rescues across Southern California and the country are experiencing a significant surge in homeless felines needing urgent care, fostering, and permanent homes.
This annual observance highlights the joys of cat companionship while addressing the challenges of pet overpopulation. Cats offer unconditional love, emotional support, stress relief, and even health benefits like improved mental well-being for their humans. Yet thousands of cats and kittens still face uncertain futures in shelters each year.
Why Now Is the Ideal Time to Adopt
Deborah Felin-Magalidi, Board Director for Helen Sanders CatPAWS, emphasizes the importance of acting during this peak season. Kitten season brings a major influx of young cats born in spring, overwhelming local resources. Adopting now not only saves lives but also frees up space in shelters and rescues for more animals in need.
“Kitten season, not nearly as cute as it sounds, is that time of the year when cats are more actively mating and producing litters of kittens. In temperate climes such as Southern California, that ‘season’ is practically year round. It is especially important to get ahead of the breeding as much as possible through humane trapping, spaying and neutering, and for the kittens that are born, to foster for independent rescues or shelters,” Deborah said. “What are the biggest risks kittens face if they don’t get rescued or fostered quickly? At many shelters, typically kittens not yet eating on their own – under 6 weeks especially – will be euthanized since shelters typically lack the resources to provide them with the 24 hour care they require. Kittens outdoors often succumb to illness, injury or fall victim to predators – four legged and two – with most not surviving.”
Meet Helen Sanders CatPAWS
Based in Seal Beach, California, Helen Sanders Cat Protection and Welfare Society (CatPAWS) is a dedicated nonprofit rescue organization committed to saving homeless and abandoned cats and kittens. Founded to continue the legacy of compassionate care, the group focuses on:
- Rescue and foster programs — Pulling at-risk cats and kittens from public shelters.
- Adoption services — Matching animals with responsible, loving forever homes.
- Spay/neuter initiatives — Providing education, assistance, and low- or no-cost clinics to prevent unwanted litters.
- Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) support — Helping manage community cat populations humanely.
CatPAWS operates as a no-kill rescue, emphasizing education and community resources to help more cats live full, cherished lives. Their work directly combats the tragic statistics: animal advocacy groups estimate millions of cats are euthanized in U.S. shelters annually, largely due to overpopulation.
The Benefits of Adoption
Adopting from a rescue like CatPAWS comes with advantages:
- Health and temperament screening — Rescued cats often receive veterinary care, vaccinations, and spay/neuter procedures before adoption.
- Support network — Organizations provide guidance on integration, behavior, and ongoing care.
- Diverse choices — From playful kittens to mellow adults and senior cats who make wonderful companions.
Whether you’re looking for an energetic kitten or a calm lap cat, there’s a perfect match waiting and always give an adult cat a chance as they can make a wonderful addition to your home, just as often as a kitten.
“What would you say to someone who is hesitant to adopt an adult cat? it seems like in general people are always looking for kittens, but there are so many adult cats who need homes. Sometimes people think that they will bond better with a cat if they get the cat as young as possible, as a tiny kitten, but we have seen that is not necessarily the case. Adult cats want love and security in some ways even more than kittens, as they are at a stage in life where they understand how important a home is. A kitten can be more active, destructive and even hazardous, especially to older folks or those with mobility issues with the way they dart about. An adult can provide a level of companionship and calm presence that is the perfect addition to a home. And they still usually like to play also! An adult cat is often the perfect choice for many people, and since they are too often overlooked, there is the added benefit of saving that life,” Deborah said.
