Mushroom coffee alternatives are everywhere—but not all of them have staying power. MUD\WTR didn’t just join the trend; it reshaped it.
As mushroom-infused drinks crowd the wellness landscape, few have defined themselves with intention. MUD\WTR has—rooted its identity, centered on quality, honesty, and a more thoughtful way to start the day. What began as a coffee alternative has since become more layered: part science-backed functional blend, part creative community, and part lifestyle grounded in mindfulness.

According to Matt Held, MUD\WTR’s Director of Research and Development, the brand emphasizes the use of full-spectrum mushroom ingredients and industry-standard extraction science. Instead of relying solely on raw ground mushroom powder, many functional mushroom products — including ones like MUD\WTR — are made using dual-extraction methods that combine water and alcohol solvents to capture both water-soluble beta-glucans and alcohol-soluble triterpenes, compounds associated in research with immune support and adaptogenic effects.
In the functional mushroom space, a common quality issue arises from products made with mycelium grown on grain, where the leftover substrate can dilute key bioactive compounds compared with fruiting body extracts. Many industry educators and supplement quality guides note that fruiting body extracts tend to contain higher concentrations of the compounds most studied for immune and cognitive effects, and that unclear labeling makes it hard for consumers to know what they’re actually buying.

Each batch undergoes consistent testing by a full time team for purity, heavy metals, and active compound verification. A full-time team based in Carlsbad, California oversees formulation, sourcing, and quality control—reinforcing that the product is not a white-labeled or loosely outsourced blend, but intentionally developed and monitored in-house.
The Cafe: A Space for Creators and Conscious Living
Beyond the beverage, the MUD\WTR Santa Monica café extends the experience beyond the cup, offering a space for connection and collaboration. The space draws creators, artists, entrepreneurs, and remote workers who want to connect and collaborate with intention rather than simply order a drink and move on. Regular breathwork and meditation sessions are woven into the weekly rhythm, grounding the café in something deeper than productivity alone.

One offering, Breathwork & Meditation with Marlize Joubert is a 30-minute guided practice designed to bring clarity and calm into the middle of the workday. Participants pause, regulate their breath, and reset before returning to their projects with steadier focus. Here, the emphasis isn’t on caffeine spikes, but on sustainable energy—both physical and mental.

Founder and CEO Shane Heath created MUD\WTR as a response to burnout culture. His goal was not simply to replace coffee, but to reshape the ritual around it—trading jittery stimulation for sustained focus and intentional living. Heath frequently speaks about designing products that support both performance and presence.

This Thursday, March 5, 2026, Heath will share the stage with world-renowned mycologist Paul Stamets at the Natural Products Expo West in Anaheim at 1:30 PM. Expo West is one of the largest natural, organic, and functional products trade shows in the world, drawing thousands of brands, retailers, and thought leaders each year. It serves as a platform for innovation in clean ingredients, sustainability, and wellness science—making it a fitting venue for a conversation about functional mushrooms and the future of mindful consumption.
MUD\WTR is more than a mushroom drink. It is a formulation strategy grounded in extract science, a California-based team committed to testing and transparency, and a café culture built on creativity and mindfulness.
In an industry crowded with buzzwords, the distinction comes down to this: efficacy, education, and intentional community.
