Culver City has a new addition, and it’s not just another café. Sweet Wheat brings something different: an authentic French bakery experience that feels less like grabbing coffee in L.A. and more like stepping into a quiet morning in France. From the moment you walk in, there’s a shift. The pace slows. The scent of fresh bread and butter fills the air. Conversations hum softly in the background. It’s the kind of place that makes you pause, like you’ve briefly stepped out of everyday Los Angeles life and into something more romantic, more intentional… almost like a scene out of Beauty and the Beast. Long before the doors open, the work has already begun. Bakers arrive around 4:00 a.m., preparing everything fresh—breads, pastries, and savory dishes. And that freshness matters. Once something sells out for the day, it’s gone.
From France to California
Sweet Wheat was founded by brothers Romain Lecat and Alexandre Lecat, who grew up in France surrounded by the tradition of real bread—crusty on the outside, soft on the inside, and made fresh daily. After spending time in Los Angeles, they realized something was missing: the authentic taste and quality of the bread they grew up with. So they returned to France, trained in top baking schools, sourced high-quality French flour, and brought that knowledge back to California. What started in Redondo Beach has now expanded to Culver City, with a clear goal—create a true neighborhood bakery rooted in French craftsmanship.

As Romain shared, the Culver City location was inspired by years of Westside customers asking for something closer. Now open on Culver Boulevard, they’re not just building a business—they’re trying to create a local gathering place where people come regularly for coffee, bread, pastries, or a simple meal.

A Menu Rooted in Tradition
Sweet Wheat offers an all-day menu, along with a brunch menu from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., blending classic French staples with elevated everyday options. Some standout dishes include:
- Parmentier du Jour – a French-style shepherd’s pie, layered with seasoned meat and creamy mashed potatoes
- French Coquillettes – a comforting pasta dish made with small macaroni, cheese, and often ham
- Duck Confit – slow-cooked duck, tender and rich, traditionally prepared in its own fat
You’ll also find classics like escargots de Bourgogne (snails baked in garlic butter) and simple but satisfying options like soup and cheese toast.
Brunch, But Elevated
- The Poached Egg Avocado Toast stands out immediately—not your typical version. Instead of overloaded toppings, it’s refined: grilled sourdough topped with a French Boursin guacamole spread, fresh avocado, olive oil, lemon vinaigrette, and a perfectly poached organic egg. Everything tastes clean, fresh, and intentional.
- The Smoked Salmon Toast is equally impressive, layered generously (and noticeably) with silky smoked salmon, crème fraîche, lemon zest, and delicate pearls that add both texture and brightness.
- And the Spinach & Goat Cheese Omelette Soft, creamy, and velvety—folded gently with organic eggs and tangy goat cheese that melts into every bite.

Pastries That Delightfully Dazzle
The patisseries are on another level. From flaky croissants to delicate madeleines, each item feels like it belongs behind a glass case in Paris. Standouts include:
- Almond croissants with a perfectly crisp exterior
- Fruit tarts with vibrant, fresh toppings
- Chocolate pastries that are rich without being heavy
- Baba au Rhum – a soft, sponge-like cake served with a dropper of rum, allowing you to infuse it yourself for a customizable, rich finish
Every detail—from texture to flavor—is intentional.

More Than Just Coffee
Sweet Wheat also offers wine and prosecco, making it just as fitting for a relaxed afternoon or early evening apéritif as it is for a morning coffee run.

And for those with dietary needs, the menu clearly marks:
- Vegetarian
- Vegan
- Gluten-Free
- Allergens
—making it easy to navigate without having to ask.

Catering & Community
Rooted in quality and freshness, Sweet Wheat brings authentic French flavors to everything from intimate gatherings to larger celebrations. Their catering menu features handcrafted pastries, artisan breads, and savory specialties—each prepared with care and tradition to elevate any occasion. At its core, though, the mission is simple: bring people together through food.
Looking Ahead
Sweet Wheat has also expanded into consulting, offering guidance to entrepreneurs, restaurateurs, and hospitality groups looking to launch or grow French bakery and café concepts. Their approach is grounded in real operational experience, providing practical support for sustainable growth and long-term success.
Sweet Wheat isn’t just a bakery—it’s an experience.
It’s the smell of bread that causes you to pause.
You come in for one thing, but leave with two.
The quiet moment with a coffee that turns into something more.
The feeling of being transported, even briefly, somewhere else.
And in a city that rarely slows down, that kind of place matters.
